I completely understand your situation. Take the time you need to heal; don't stress yourself out worrying about being absent. (I've been taking a break from a lot of my social media presence lately; it was necessary.) Healing is a process, and sometimes that process has to be adjusted to the body's ability to reset. I really liked your poem! I was out with the fireflies and stars last night. I needed to check on Harper Lee because the coyotes were howling nearby, but the fluffy kitty girl was fine, unconcerned. I believe she befriends and respects many of her wildlife neighbors, and knows how to handle herself when they are near. She often shares her kibble with a skunk and an opossum (not at the same time). I found a firefly tangled in the weeds, followed its faint blinking light, and set it free. It spent time on my hand, then flew, bumped into my hair, and buzzed in my ear, then landed on my hand again before twinkling off into the darkest place in my garden. It was magical! Take care!
Thank you so so much for your words, Laura! They give a sense of rest just reading them and, of course, visualizing you and the creatures interacting. Yesterday I watched a coyote trotting purposefully right through the horse pen, she and Rita ignoring each other as if by a tacit agreement. I'm sure they're not strangers, as I've seen that coyote repeatedly myself. I couldn't help thinking, though, how very comfortable that wild creature was with my moving around and jabbering to the horses the whole time. As my sister pointed out, she has probably been near enough to see and hear me many times without me knowing it! There is lots of magic out there just for the noticing!
I do have bouts of brutal migraines sometimes (can go years without but then suffer as it returns in full force)- it's incredibly hard to make through even with the medication, I barely imagine without. I hope the insurance idiots come through and your doctor advocates your case, so the issue never rises again. Idiots. sorry, so mad for you. So familiar too, constant stupid battles.
Thank you so very much, dear Chen! I know you understand the difficulties... that is a silly word for it--I don't think I have a good one. Perhaps I should say the torment of chronic pain. Not to mention the frustration of these behemoth systems that have no care at all for one's wellbeing! The good news is that the insurance problem has been resolved, and I should be able to get things back on track in a few days. I am very grateful that there are now finally medications that were developed specifically for migraines; they have made a difference for me! Good night, and happy Friday!
I'm so sorry for your pain and fatigue, and so moved by your patience and perseverance in caring for yourself and your work in the midst of it. With you, I hope the medication issue is sorted soon. In the meantime, please take whatever time you need, and know how you and your poems are valued by so many strangers "here" in Substack-land. 💛🌿
Many many thanks! I am so grateful for the patience of my friends here. And I am happy to say "friends" though we are strangers in so many ways. Just the kindness and interests and shared loves make such a special group of people!
